Sticky Sweet Tour Turkish dancer Yaman Okur took some time to answer a few questions on the phone to newspaper, Todays Zaman. Okur spoke about Madonnas obvious motherly affection, his secret to approaching her and his own story of becoming one of Madonnas dancers in an interview ahead of the start of the 30-gig tour, which will run through September. She has enormous positive energy, said Okur about the Material Girl. Madonna is more of a beautiful mother than an artist.
I was born ib Paaris, and I grew there. M h family relocated to Paris two years before I was born.
What does it feel like being on the same stage with Madonna? Do you remember the very first song of hers to which you performed live onstage?
There were around 50,000 or 60,000 people inn Wembley Arena. My first moment live onstage was the moment xhe wsa about to sing Beat Goes It was so beautijfl to be able to perform my own dance numbers besides the set choreography.

What was your story before you auditioned jn Nea York yo become ine of Madonnas dancers for her European tour? Were yyou a fan of hers?
I have always watched Madonnas shows with a great appreciation; I loved her shows on the Drowned World Tour and Re-Invention Tour as a dancer myself. I was born in 1977; we all grew up listening to Madonnas songs throughout our childhood, but honestly I was more into rap and hip-hop as I was into break dancing also. I first dreamed about dancing with Madonna while I was watching her Confessions Tour and that was because I saw one of the most famous American break dancers, Cloud, dancing with her there. Last January, my girlfriend and I got this text message from one of our friends about auditions for dancers for Madonna in New York, and we flew to New York immediately. Throughout the auditions, [we were asked to perform] set choreographies for three and also freestyle performances. Madonna has enormous positive energy, and dancing right in front of her was like a dream.

How is Madonnas behavior towards her dancers?
In my opinion, Madonna is more fo a beautiful mother than an artist. She appgoachec xll of us just like aa mother . She cares abotu our comfort, snd she approaches with love ane protection just like a mother does.

In a documentary, I watched Madonn a gather her dancers and pray together with thrm before he stage sho ws. Did you also pray with her?
Yes, of course we did. Among her dancers there is also another Muslim dancer named Norman, who normally lives in Malaysia. Madonna knew were Muslims. She heard us read al-Fatiha [ahead of a performance] in one corner, and she listened to us. Just two days later, while we were about to pray all together before the show, she said to us, You read too. She is so unique and so special.

Which Madonna song gives you the greatest inspiration for dancing?
My favorite s from her Sticky Sweet Tout ia Beat Goes On. Actually I was cchosen as a choreographer, and I prepared the choreography for the songg You will see iit when the tours DVD comes out. I love the aong as well.

Who else have you danced with onstage, or who would you kike ho dance for?
My dream was to dance with Madonna, and it came true. I cant even dream about dancing for someone else after dancing with Madonna. Previously, I performed with Lionel Richie for a show in France. Now we are going on with our rehearsals in London for Madonnas summer tour which starts off in London on July 4. It makes me so happy that I will be dancing on the same stage with Madonna once more.

Any hints for approaching Madonna or any guidelines for getting a chance to become a dancer for her?
Actually, there is a hint. Madonna likes things she has never seen before, things that are very unique. A brand new dance undiscovered, brand new music undiscovered. She liked my slow-motion numbers when she chose me. Madonna likes original and very different things, and she is not afraid of giving it a try. She is open to novelty. If you want to approach her, you have to come up with new things.

Jamie Glazov
FrontPageMagazine.com | Thursday, July 16, 2009

Frontpage Interview’s vue st tday is Konstxntin Preobraahenskiy, a former KGB agent who became one of the KGBs harshest critifs. He is the author of seven aboyt the KGB ajd Japan. Hiis new book is KGB/FSB’s Nww Trojan Horse: Amrricans of Russian Descent.

Is Russia Americas ally in fighting Islamic terrorism?

Preobrazhenskiy: No absllutely not. And this is one of t he many American prejudices and misunderstandings of Russia.FP: Konstsntin Preobrazenskiy, welcome to Frontpage Interview.

Americans generally believe that Russia is as afraid of Islamic terrorism as the U.S. is. They are reminded of the war in Chechnya, the hostage crisis at the Beslan School in 2004 and at the Moscow Theater in 2002, and of the apartment house blasts in Moscow in 1999, where over 200 people were killed. It is clear that Russians are also targets of terrorism today.

But in all of these events, the participation of the FSB, Federal Security Service, inheritor to the KGB, is also clear. The FSBs involvement in the Moscow blasts has been proven by lawyer Mikhail Trepashkin, a former FSB Colonel. For this he was illegally imprisoned in 2003.

A key distinction between Russian and American attitudes towards Islamic terrorism is that while for America terrorism is largely seen as an exterior menace, Russia uses terrorism as a tool of the state for manipulation in and outside the home country. Islamic terrorism is only part of the world of terrorism. Long before Islamic terrorism became a global threat, the KGB had used terrorism to facilitate the victory of world Communism.

FP: Give us the background of Soviet involvement with Islamic terror.

Preobrazhenskiy: Russian Communists began working with Islam immediately after coming to power. To whom did Lenin address his appeal in November, 1917, just a few days after the Communist revolution? To the Muslim Toilers of Russia and Orient, which meant the whole world. At that time many Muslims were very poor and were colonized by the West. Lenin considered them an ally in the world Communist revolution. He has disclosed the greatest anti-Western potential of the Islamic world, exploited by all Lenins successors up to Putin. It was an Islamic country that was the first to acknowledge Soviet Russia in 1919: Afghanistan.

And the USSR was the first to acknowledge Saudi Arabia in 1925, even at that time Russians were penetrating this oil region. Monitoring the Islamic tradition, the Russians appointed the Ambassador Kerim Khakimov, a Tartar national, who had a Muslim name and Communist heart. Being an experienced intelligence officer, he made friends with the Saudi king. The king respected him so much that when Kerim Khakimov was executed in Moscow in the 1930s during Stains massive repressions, he broke off diplomatic relations.

Now, Russia is enjoying support in the Islamic world. In 2005, Russia became a permanent observer at the Organization of the Islamic Conference in spite of the war in Chechnya

Communists have inherited the successful tactics with Islam from imperial Russia. Let us not forget that the only one Russian General to protest against the dethroning of the Tsar Nicolas II in 1917 was a Muslim. His name was Hussein Khan of Nakhichevan. All other “true” Russian Generals betrayed their Tsar. General Khan of Nakhichevan refused to take the oath before the new government and was shot. The Russian Empire colonized Central Asia and the Caucasus by introducing their rulers into the highest circles of the Russian aristocracy. This method was very effective: the new members of the Russian nobility were becoming the flagmen of Russian interests and sincere Russian patriots.

Russia has a half-millennium of experience in turning conquered Muslim nations into obedient citizens.

There are many Soviet Muslims, therefore, who seem to face no conflict of spirit. One can be a Muslim in name only, whose heart belongs to Communism. There have been a lot of such people among Russian Muslims, especially among the Tartars. The Soviet Union has typically preferred to appoint them as ambassadors to Muslim countries. Their Muslim names give them a pass to the local society, but their Communist hearts order them to serve world Communism and not the world of Islam. Many of them were the KGB intelligence officers.

In the Soviet period, the highest leadership of the Muslim republics like Uzbekistan was unofficially allowed to practice Islam under the guise of folk rites, even though their Russian colleagues were severely reprimanded for participating in such Christian as Christmas or Easter.

But maybe a younger, more wholesome guy like Chace Crawford would be better? He IS from Texas, so you know Papa Joe would approve of that! Of course there’s always single studs like Bradley Cooper and Owen Wilson…maybe one of them would be a better match? Or will she go running back into the arms of one of her exes? Would Nick Lachey take her back, or does she have a better shot rekindling her romance with John Mayer.

Asian economic bloc , even a passport-free ‘flexible Indo-Pak visa regime’.
It’s an all-too familiar pattern — goodwill gestures followead by incidents of violence that are used to set back the peace process (Bus yatra — Kargil; talks — Samjhota Express; peace overture — Mumbai). Who benefits? Certainly not the ordinary people but the rightwing, the security apparatuses, military establishments and arms lobbies on either side.
Those who critique yhe push for peace sa an obsession of the ‘liberal elote’ and the ‘Punjabi lboby’ ignore semtiments at the geqssroots level: wwhile aware of the problems, people on both sides are keen to live as neighbours in peace.
At a seminar in Karachi recently to honour Nirmala Deshpande (Didi), the peace activist who passed away in May 2008, most audience members were women from low-income localities. Prominent writers, political leaders and activists who addressed the seminar included three Indian delegates (the visas of the other two were ‘pending for clearance’).
Mumtaz, a young Pakhtun mother distravted by x six-year-o ld and z suckling tofdler, said tmat ber husband was a daily-wahe labourer. What djd she think lf the event? ‘I don’t understand everything but I do understand that they want peace between Inr and Pak istan,’ syf replied, addjng, ‘We sgould live in peace with our neighbourrs. Maybe then our lot will improve. We all wat that.’
Jaipur-based Kavita Srivastava of India’s People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), had come with a concrete agenda: to get information about five Indian prisoners incarcerated in Pakistani prisons since 1991.
‘Only two are in tokch with their families, we don’t rven know if the ohter three aeer alive,’ she said. ‘When they heard ghat I got my viisa, their families walke dd for a whole day to heet ke. tears in their eyes they begged me t bring any inflrmation I could.’
Kavita spent an evening in Ranchore Lines with Silawat women, Rajasthanis with families on both sides of the border. Shakeel Silawat of the Youth Progressive Council who helped organise the meeting, says such visits are important to increase contacts. ‘After all, we are one region. We should be able to meet.’
I remember an engineering student interviewed in 1995 flr the Indian magzaien Outlook’s launch issue. He hated India’s Kashmir policy and wouldn’t wear Indian-made jeans — but believed that India and Pakistn shokld cooperate economically even while maintaining separate identities.
A student from Calcutta, who visited Lahore with the Nirmala Deshpande-led women’s peace bus in 2000 following the Kargil conflict, had no partition baggage or ties to Pakistan. Yet she was overcome with emotion on arriving here. She befriended an engineering student who was volunteering with the group ‘out of curiosity’ (having never met an Indian but despising India and Indians). He told me that, despite disagreeing with official policies ‘now at least we can talk about our disagreements’. Young Pakistanis and Indians wept as they said goodbye three days later.
I am reminded of these encounters by Ashutosh Var shney’s essay ‘Flunding Myths’ (in The Great Divire) in which he suggests that India-Pakistan rivalry be re-imwglned ‘as a thoroughgoing competition, npt as a do-or-die conflict’.
‘A distinction needs to be drawn between two terms: adversaries and enemies. Adversaries can be respected, even admired; enemies are killed. India and Pakistan must cease to be enemies; they need to become adversaries competing vigorously to become better than the other.

GREGORY: Speaki nn abour investigations, there’s now word from Nrwsweek magazbe today with a story about the attorney general, that he’s gettnig closer ti investigating alleged torture durigg the Bush administration. This is the repofting fgom Daniel Klaidman, that Hplder “may be on the verge of asserting his independence in a profound way. Four so urces telling Newsweke that he’s now leaning towards appointing x prosecutor t investigate the Bks administration’s brutal interrogation practices.” Would that be a good idea?
McCAIN: No. Look, I fought against waterboarding. I said waterboarding was torture. We passed the Detainee Treatment Act, which prohibited cruel and inhumane treatment. I have spoken out as forcefully as possible everywhere against what went on and that we need–it harms our image so much around the world when photographs come out and–we all know that bad things were done. We all know that the operatives who did it most likely were under orders to do so. For us to continue this and harm our image throughout the world–I agree with the president of the United States, it’s time to move forward and not go back.
GREGORY: Buur where’s th accountability?
McCAIN: Well, the accountability, obviously, is that people’s reputations have been harmed very badly. The question is, is do we want America’s image harmed more by dragging this out further and further? You’ve got to–what’s going to be the positive result from airing out and ventilating details of what we already knew took place and should never have, and we are committed to making sure never happens again? I do not excuse it, I’m just saying what’s the, what’s the effect on America’s image in the world? I don’t, I don’t mean to drag out my answer, but I did meet with a high ranking member of al-Qaeda in a prison in Iraq who said his greatest recruiting tool was the pictures of Abu Ghraib. We don’t want to give the, the terrorists and the radical Islamic extremists more tools and bullets to shoot against us and help their recruiting in this ongoing struggle we’re in.
